Can you learn to draw on your own?
Many newbies ask this question. Should I take drawing lessons? Or can I learn at my own pace? How to learn to draw alone and is it really possible?
We think that some people know how to draw and others don’t. But without a doubt everyone can draw and no young child wonders whether he can draw or not. He draws, that’s all. Indeed, for many of us, knowing how to draw means making a very realistic drawing like a photo. This is a false idea, indeed the drawings and paintings of Matisse have a very childish line. Does he draw? Yes ! However, many artists then learned the academic basics of drawing and then got away with doing the opposite.
Learning to draw depends on your goals. The academic bases of drawing can be useful to you if you want to be an architect. However, not knowing its basics does not in any way prevent you from drawing as you see fit.
The first step to start drawing is to free yourself from this limiting thought and take pleasure in drawing above all, without stress of the final result and without expectation. Simply draw because you feel like it.
