The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha has been officially unveiled. It is a smartphone with a very surprising design since the screen is wrapped around the smartphone. Also count on a main 108 megapixel photo sensor and 5G compatibility.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha has just been formalized in China with a rather amazing design. Indeed, the smartphone sees its screen wrap around the device to go cover a large part of the rear surface. In fact, the display area is only interrupted by a vertical bar on the back, notably housing the triple photo module.
Xiaomi is therefore very proud to speak of a flexible “Surround Display” screen with a “screen-to-body ratio»Of 180.6%.
In French, we could try to translate this by saying that the screen covers 180.6% of the front surface, but that brings with it a lot of confusion. What must be understood is that the slab “overflows” and therefore necessarily the percentage announced far exceeds the ceiling of 100%.

Interesting detail: the curved edges of the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha replace the status bar to display the battery level, the network and the notifications. The screen rolled up in this way also allows to get rid of the front photo sensor. To take a selfie, just use the camera on the back and use the screen tip on the back to see the image you are about to capture.
Xiaomi also mentions optimizations of its MIUI interface to adapt to this rolled up screen. So when you return the smartphone, you can quickly consult some practical information such as a reminder of your flight times.
For the photo, Xiaomi highlights the main 108 megapixel sensor which promises to capture the smallest details in the images.

We have to believe that Xiaomi does not race only at megapixels in photo sensors. With its Mi Mix Alpha, smartphone-concept that announces the future of the company, we can observe that the race is also played on who will have the most curved slab. And it seems that the Mi Mix Alpha is victorious, since it is no longer just a screen smartphone that has got rid of everything that can constitute the rear surface of a mobile today.
NO SLIDER, BUT A “SUPER CURVED” SCREEN
Did you say excess?
A panel which covers almost all of the telephone and which therefore occupies a total area of 180.6% – never seen before. No more information as to the size of the screen, its resolution or the technology used, but the smartphone looks rather large. Besides, this panel contains everything that attracts sound, so you will not find a visible speaker on what remains of the chassis. The borders are also greatly reduced with 2.15 mm thickness. Since the slab curls entirely on the edges, the buttons are absent for subscribers. As on the recent Huawei Mate 30 Pro, it offers haptic feedback keys, placed on both sides of the mobile. All informative icons (Wi-Fi signal, mobile network or Bluetooth) are also on the edges, to be visible at all times.
The part of the screen located on the back can be used to display widgets, interactive thumbnails that provide information such as the next flights, a transport route or what you want. It can also be used to take selfies, but this is a subject we will come back to below.
For the rest of the chassis, the firm used titanium for the top and bottom of the mobile as well as ceramic coupled with sapphire glass for the part housing the 3 photographic sensors.
Regarding performance, note that it is equipped with a Snapdragon 855+, 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage in UFS 3.0. It also incorporates a 5G chip. As for the battery, it will be necessary to count on 4050 mAh which will accept fast charging at 40 W.
The first 108 MP smartphone
It was not really a secret, but the fact remains that it still has its effect. While we are just entering the mobile era with 64 MP sensors, Xiaomi is unsheathing the higher version with a main 108 MP sensor. The latter is 4 times larger than a 48 Mpx sensor and will allow you to capture snapshots with a definition of 12,032 x 9,024 pixels. It will be possible to zoom up to 8 times inside the photograph, without a loss of detail being noticeable. The second 20 MP sensor is an ultra wide angle and the last 12 MP has a telephoto lens for 2x zoom. It is specified that taking macro photos at 1.5 cm distance will be possible.
We did not mention the front camera, and this is normal since it does not exist. Xiaomi could not offer one under the screen or in a pop-up and therefore had to find a more practical and “original” solution. Just turn the phone over to take a selfie. The latter will therefore be in 48 MP and the part of the screen at the back will serve as a return. A practical solution which will allow you to obtain the same image quality at the front or at the rear.
Price and availability
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is above all a concept. So, for the moment, the manufacturer has prepared only prototypes that Chinese consumers can already discover in stores. However, the brand specifies that mass production has not yet been launched, but that it intends to tackle it before the end of the year to offer the device to a maximum of users as soon as possible.
A at a price of 19,999 yuan, or about 2,500 € in gross conversion. A cost that far exceeds the € 2,000 displayed by the Samsung Galaxy Fold but which could – supposedly – make people dream more than a foldable smartphone.
