Although announced for the end of last year, the Samsung Gear S4 is still pending; the brand having preferred to reveal its Samsung Gear Sport instead. Today, I suggest you take stock of what we know about the next Samsung Gear smartwatch; and what features users will potentially have on their wrist soon.
What you will learn
Samsung Gear S4 design
The future name of the Samsung Gear S4
At this point, there is still a strong possibility that the next Samsung smartwatch will be part of the Gear range and will be called the S4. However, a trademark registration granted to Samsung for a different name, the Galaxy Watch, suggests that a name change is entirely possible.
Of course, the term Galaxy has always been present throughout the history of the company's smartphone. So it would be logical to harmonize this with the range of smartwatches. However, at this point, all is speculation. Finally, be aware that Samsung has also registered the name Galaxy Fit.
Finally, to finish on this subject, know that the charger for the next smartwatch seems to have been certified in South Korea; revealing model number SM-R805. The Gear S3 model number was SM-R760 and the Gear Sport model number was SM-R600.
The weight of the Samsung Gear S4
The Samsung Gear S4 should be thinner and lighter. The transformation has already been observed between the Gear S3 and the Gear Sport.
Additionally, earlier this year, Samsung announced mass production of its Exynos 7 Dual 7270 chipset; which should power its next generation of wearables. Equipped with a 4G LTE modem (which is not in the Gear Sport), it is smaller than the chipset currently used.
Samsung Gear Edge
We now know all Samsung phones with curved screens. Will the Gear S4 be the next to use this design?
A patent pending suggests that this may well be the case. It reveals a thin strip of display formed on the edge of the dial. Thus, it would offer users a shortcut to applications with basic information; like date, time and weather.
But let's be careful, this is just one of many patents.
Samsung Gear S4 battery
There is a good chance that the watch battery is now in the strap. This would allow Samsung to add sensors without enlarging or weighing down the smartwatch.
These batteries located in the bracelet could also simply be used to slightly improve the life of the main battery.
Sub-screen for rotating bezel
The patent also reveals a second screen. Samsung could seek to bring more functionality to its rotating bezel.
According to the patent, users would navigate the Tizen operating system by turning the bezel to a specific segment on the ring; with each section dedicated to an application or functionality. For example, between 4 am and 6 am, you can have a segment that allows you to manage your music when you rotate.
Phone charging
As we all know, most traditional smartwatches have not yet resolved battery life issues.
Thus, the smartwatch could be charged via the smartphone, simply by placing it on it. Hope this idea comes to fruition because it's great!
A Samsung Gear S4 with Wear OS
Nothing is less certain but it is said that Samsung would work on a Wear OS smart health watch. According to several reports, Samsung is working on a smartwatch that runs on Google’s operating system; which would be a big first since 2014 and Gear Live.
Specifications of the Samsung Gear S4
Measure blood pressure in depth
According to a patent filed by the company, the watch uses light technology to measure blood pressure. The device in the patent refers to a Samsung Gear X, which looks like the old smartwatches of the Korean company.
For this type of functionality, the big challenge for Samsung, as for any company that offers wearables, is to be approved by the health authorities.
Bixby
Samsung's Bixby digital voice assistant was launched last year during the presentation of the previous generation of Samsung smartphones. A priori, Bixby will replace S Voice on the Gear S4.
Samsung said that "Bixby is the assistant that we will install in many other Samsung devices like the watch, the television, the refrigerator. "
S Patch
Since its launch in January 2016 at CES, the idea of a device dedicated to health and well-being has gained ground. After a long silence, it looks like an S-Patch 3 will be available soon.
Health
If Gear Sport gives pride of place to sport and physical condition; chances are the Gear S4 is very interested in our health. In an interview with CNBC earlier this year, DJ Koh, director of Samsung Mobile, said: "If we can create a smartwatch capable of monitoring your health and providing information, the market will grow. "
Sleep tracking
A report from SamMobile indicates that the Gear S4 will offer sleep tracking functionality. The report also indicated that the Gear S4 model number would be SM-800; and that his code name was Galileo.
LTE
Then, following the report we just mentioned, SamMobile recently noted that an LTE variant of the Gear S4 is being developed in the United States.
Also, the brand would have signed agreements with Verizon, AT & T and T-Mobile. In addition, the smartwatch could also be available in two different versions or sizes; with or without LTE.
Samsung Gear S4 output date
Finally, the last two Samsung smartwatches were announced in late August before launching in November.
It is almost certain that the Samsung Gear S4 will be unveiled at IFA 2018 in late August / early September. A report from the Korean ETNews site supports this theory; claiming that the new watch will arrive in August.
Then, as its competitors constantly unveil their products as Christmas approaches, it would be surprising to see Samsung deviate from its now routine launch cycle.
