Wearables: Samsung Electronics is the market leader

South Korean technology giant Samsung Electronics was the market leader for wearables last year – including smartwatches and fitness trackers. According to the Hamburg statistics portal statista the company sold around 1.2 million devices in 2014. That could also be due to the broad product portfolio: Samsung Electronics has several smartwatches and a fitness tracker on offer. All are only compatible with the in-house phones.

The US startup Pebble Technology is in second place. It has sold a total of 700,000 Pebble Smartwatch and Pebble Steel watches. The young company from Palo Alto, California recently introduced the two generation of its wristwatches, the Pebble Time and the Pebble Time Steel.

Bronze goes to Fitbit. The manufacturer, which specializes in fitness trackers, was able to sell 600,000 devices. We tested one of the latest models, the Fitbit Charge HR, a few weeks ago.

The remaining places include Sony, the Lenovo Group, LG Electronics, Garmin, Withings, Polar and Asus.

Apple will unveil its first wearable to the public tonight: the Apple Watch. The watch has been official for a few months, but nothing is known about the function or the more precise availability. Will the market change after the launch of the Apple Watch? No question, of course he will, my feeling tells me – analysts say the same thing. We are excited to see what Apple is doing today. TechStage will blog the event live.
