The end of smart health connected objects for Nike

[ad_1]

The equipment supplier Nike has formalized its disengagement from smart health connected objects, at least in hardware. He plans to refocus on his software, Nike +. The Fuelband remains available.

In recent weeks, rumors about Nike and the abandonment of smart health connected devices (hardware) have largely fueled the buzz. It is now official, the equipment manufacturer confirmed on Saturday to CNET the final shutdown of its line of smart health connected clothing and accessories in favor of its new Nike + software platform. Moreover, the American firm did not wait to start laying off the first employees of its branch (about 55 out of 70 people in all) dedicated to smart health connected objects …

The reason: Increased competition?

Nike has announced that its second generation smart health bracelet – the Fuelband SE – will continue to be sold, that they will be working on improvements to the mobile app, and that new colors are already planned (including METALUXE). However, the new, thinner version scheduled for fall has been canceled.

Is increased competition in the activity tracker market behind this decision? The American webzine CNET claims that the potential arrival of Apple and Google in this market would technically make the Fuelband obsolete, and that Nike would therefore have better to play on the software part. CNET France even imagines the scenario where the equipment manufacturer would strengthen its links with Apple, which could ultimately ingest NikeFuel in the future iWatch… Let us also remember that Nike launched last week the Fuel Lab in San Francisco, an incubator for start-ups that will have to use Nike + technology (and the famous NikeFuel) in their products.
