Tag Heuer boss Claude Biver warns of the Apple Watch and demands that Swiss watchmakers use their own smartwatches to defend themselves against the competition from Cupertino.
According to media reports, Tag Heuer boss Claude Biver warned in an interview with Switzerland on Sunday before Apple using his watch as competition for the watch industry. According to Biver, one should be careful not to take Apple seriously with its smartwatch. Tag Heuer itself recently launched its smart health connected Watch – a smartwatch with an Android Wear operating system and a price tag of 1350 euros.
With this wearable, Biver sees itself well equipped against Apple as a competitor. He believes that the Cupertino-based company could have been dangerous for Tag Heuer models at entry-level prices of around 1100 euros – but this risk has now been averted with the smart health connected watch. Biver is concerned about the Swiss watch industry. Without an answer to the Apple Watch, Swiss brands would be attacked with watches between just under 300 and 1,800 euros. He also predicts the loss of market share that would not be good for the industry as a whole.
However, Claude Biver also admitted that he could be wrong and "the spook will be over in two or three years." Since nobody knew this, it would be better to protect yourself. He doesn't know whether the watchmaking industry is preparing for an attack.
In addition to Tag Heuer, the Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch also has an intelligent watch in its range, which however does not do much more than count steps and measure calories. However, the second generation of the Touch Zero One is already in development – it should then also enable cashless payment via NFC.
