smart health connected objects to anticipate the couple quarrels!

Researchers at the University of Southern California recently worked on a study to detect conflict-specific vital and vocal signs before they occur.

For the purposes of the study, couples were equipped with sensors smart health connected to their smartphones and sent to the field. Mostly outside the laboratory, participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire every hour about how they felt about their spouse.

Rather than trying to provoke conflicts outwardly, the team let things be done by themselves – and the nature is rather well done.

Sensors detected body temperature, heart rate and sweat, then this information was crossed to the study ofaudio recordings to determine the content and intensity of the speech. This information then fed an algorithm with machine-learning developed by the research team, which achieved a reliability rate of 86%.

The goal of the researchers is to use this algorithm to create a model to detect conflicts up to … 5 minutes in advance ! The sensors are rather classical, the process could be exported on most "wearables" models on the market to improve the monitoring of emotional health.

So yes, this story of tracking emotions can worry, or even sound very futuristic, but the future of smart health connected objects seems to be in an ever more precise monitoring of their users and it goes through these emotions. One can think in particular cases of burnout or depression that could be anticipated and better supervised, for example.
