What you will learn
Unboxing of the Fii Smart Thermometer
The packaging presents a white and cyan color scheme, characteristic of the brand. By opening the main box, a notice is visible in French, superimposed on a rectangular cardboard. The oval object is inserted into specific contours delimited in the same box. Two layers of rigid cardboard of different sizes fit together on the principle of Russian dolls.
On the latter are written various information : A foreword, the presentation of the product, its various functionalities, its accessories, its technical details, its application as well as safety instructions.
By removing the rectangular cardboard carrying the product and holding it vertically, there are two notches at the top and bottom of the box that allow it to be opened. It contains a second notice in English and Chinese.
Fii Smart Thermometer design and ergonomics
The originality of this Fii Smart Thermometer lies in its shape. Instead of offering it in a more classic form (stick, rod, etc.), this thermometer is presented in the form of an armband with a dial of plastic. The design, meanwhile, remains classic. If we forget the color and the material of the bracelet, making us think more of a blood pressure monitoring.
Like on a touch watch (luxury not included) the dial consists of a digital display as well as an ignition button. Unlike the example above, it does not respond to touch.
The Fii Smart Thermometer works with the help of a battery which must be inserted into the recess on the inside of the watch. We can see in the previous image the type of connection used by the device: Bluetooth.
Application of the Fii Smart Thermometer
The operation of the application turns out to be hazardous even if the product was well thought out. We will explain operating problems to you later in this Review. In addition to the Bluetooth connection, a sensor is present on the thermometer bracelet to detect the temperature.
Before talking about the features, it should still be noted thatit is necessary to connect via your email address to receive a code in order to register your profile. Once the code is received, you must type and confirm a password of up to 16 characters.
After registration, user has access to a digital tutorial to understand the product installation process. It is explained by the diagram below.
The application offers several features. Firstly, a regular hourly tracking system represented in the form of a graph, analyzing the child's body temperature over time in real time. The child should keep the thermometer at arm level for several hours so that parents can see a change in temperature.
Above the graph, by pressing the date displayed at the top of the screen, you will have access to a calendar on which you can manually enter your child's temperature after reading. It is also possible to add additional notes on the health of your newborn.
One of the other functionalities proposes to measure the temperature at the instant T. This is displayed directly on the application, in the affected area. Rather practical when the thermometer dial turns off. When it goes to sleep, it remains functional. The result, normally shown on the dial, remains on the app screen no matter what.
You can set various details such as the alert temperature. When your child starts to have a fever and exceeds the alert temperature, an alarm is triggered. You can set the tone of this alarm according to your preferences in the menu.
In the configuration section, you can access the battery level of your device and judge the duration of autonomy. As we wrote above, after multiple tests, we can see inconsistencies in the temperatures given by the application. They focus on a scale between 26 degrees and 33 degrees Celsius.
This can be problematic in the sense that the graph, taking the information in real time, takes into account the data only from 32 degrees Celsius. A temperature which remains much lower than those which should be given in normal times.
Using the Fii Smart Thermometer
During our Review, we started by attaching the thermometer to the wrist, unable to install it on the arm due to a simple difference in morphology. The indicated temperature was 27 degrees Celsius. So we tried to Review it on the front to see the differences in the readings.
We were able to observe a margin of only a few degrees. The results have increased by about 5 degrees, which remains insufficient. Perhaps it is simply functional on a child's arm, as specified on the product leaflet? This would explain the disappointing performance of the Fii Smart Thermometer.
The Fii Smart Thermometer normally attaches around the child's arm and connects via Bluetooth to the application that measures the infant's temperature. As said before the temperatures were well below normal averages. It shows a serious problem with sensor accuracy, the tester being in good health.
After applying it to the forehead of the tester, the dial only showed us temperatures between 26 and 33 degrees Celsius. Two icons (the first letters of “high” and “low”) appear when the temperature detected is too low or too high. So we mainly saw the “low” icon, much less the “high”. Why are readings so low? We can hypothesize the imprecision of the thermometer or that of a questionable Bluetooth connection between the app and the device. We could not find the real cause of the problem.
Fii Smart Thermometer facing the competition
In the smart health connected thermometers sector, many products are neck and neck and try to outdo each other. Many companies are embarking on an innovation race between the Flo contactless thermometer and the Stamp start-up thermometer.
These three products have several things in common, one of which is the majority: the mobile application. Unlike the Fii Smart Thermometer, the Stamp is designed for everyone; including children.
It is developed in the medical field so that doctors can have real-time remote monitoring with their patient. This device was, basically, designed by three parents who wanted to take their children's temperature at night, without having to wake them up. It was used in the sports field, in particular by the German Football team at the time of the last world cup, to measure the temperature of the sportsmen with the effort.
The Flo, meanwhile, goes further in innovation. It works with an app, but the front thermometer can be used without a smartphone. However, the result will be transmitted directly to the application. It is renowned for its precision.
Its margin of error is 0.2 degrees, which contrasts with the Fii Smart thermometer. The Flo is sold at a price of around 35 euros. Slightly more expensive for a product that seems to be of better quality, but only compatible with iOS.
Conclusion
Good points
-
- Easy to use
- Intuitive application
- Quick pairing
Negative points
- Poor quality / price ratio
- Doubtful performances
- Lack of precision
(Review) Fii Smart Thermometer: the smart health connected thermometer takes the temperature of your newborn
Reviewed by Matthieu Zouzac
we
Design and finishes: In all sincerity, the Fii Smart Thermometer does not shine with its beauty. Its foam strap and plastic-coated dial leave something to be desired.
Features: Pairing between the thermometer and the application is done without much difficulty. The application displays the same temperature as on the medical device. However, as explained earlier in the Review, the results displayed seem to be a bit … skewed.
Use / handling: Once the Bluetooth is activated and the device turned on, the handling is intuitive, you just have to wait.
Value for money: For fifteen euros more you can turn to the competition for a much more precise product and for all ages. The Fii Smart does not have these qualities … Too bad.
