In addition to its other announcements at CES, Samsung unveiled its new Bluetooth locator; the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag.
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is a lost property tag for Samsung owners. Like the AirTags from Tile and Apple, which will be available soon, the tag can be attached to keys, a bag; but also to a pet collar or any other object you want to track. First, the Galaxy SmartTag will use Bluetooth to communicate with a nearby Samsung device. But the company has confirmed that an ultra-wideband (UWB) version called SmartTag + will arrive later this year.
The latter would allow the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag to better compete with Apple AirTags. These should also take advantage of the UWB capabilities of newer iPhones. In anticipation of this news, Tile has already developed a UWB tracker which will also arrive later this year.
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag is for Galaxy devices
The tracker works with any Galaxy device, a Samsung representative told us; provided the device is running Android 10 or higher.
Device owners can then locate the lost item with the SmartTag attached using the SmartThings Find app.
This system works the same as Tile and other BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) tracking systems. When the SmartTag is offline – that is, disconnected from the Galaxy S21 or other device – it sends out a BLE signal that can be detected by nearby Galaxy devices. When detected, the device sends nearby location information to the SmartThings app so that you can locate the object. According to Samsung, the user’s data in the SmartThings Find app is encrypted and protected. So your location and personal information are safe when you lose your device and use the app to find it.
What is the Samsung tracker for
The app will also offer a variety of location tools; including a “Notify me when it’s found” option. It also offers “Search Nearby”, “Search” and “Ring” tools. Like Tile, you can also use a SmartTag to locate a missing phone. In this case, you double tap the Galaxy SmartTag button to receive an alert. This alert helps you locate the missing phone.
The tag can also be customized to do other things when pressed once. So that you can easily turn on your lights or the TV when you get health home; for example.
Prior to the announcement, regulatory documents presented the tracker as a slightly larger version of Tile’s trackers. They explained that they were powered by a CR2032 living area battery, with Bluetooth connectivity. The battery is indeed a user-replaceable CR2032.
The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag will cost € 29.90 per unit. They are now available on the brand’s website. This price is slightly higher than that of Tile Mate, Tile’s entry-level Bluetooth tracker; it retails for € 24.99.
