How to Increase Your Goal Achievement
Achieving your goals is not easy. It is even often frustrating.
Typically the process looks a bit like this:
We set a specific goal
We’re fired up and we start working on it
We encounter the first difficulties
We try to persevere
We get demotivated and we end up giving up
The biggest difficulty in pursuing a goal is not so much setting the goal. We all know that our goals should be specific. We have all heard, seen or read it somewhere.
What is difficult is what comes next, once the goal is set.
When you meet the first obstacles.
When early motivation gives way to frustration.
When we are disappointed with our results.
When we are not moving as fast as we would like.
It is in these moments that we must know what to do otherwise we end up giving up.
Fortunately, there is a method that not only allows you to define your goals effectively but also to persevere when things get difficult.

Step 1: Define specific objectives
As you probably already know, when you set a goal, you have to make sure it’s specific. The more specific an objective, the more effectively we can direct our efforts and actions to achieve it.
One of the most popular methods for setting specific goals is the SMART method. This method consists in making our objectives Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, Realistic, Time-bound.
Here is what these terms refer to:
Specific: Our objectives must be clear, precise and must not be ambiguous. A non-specific objective would be for example: “I want to improve in Spanish”. What do we mean by improving? Does it mean enriching your vocabulary? Speak more fluently? Here we see that there are a multitude of possible interpretations. This is often a sign that our goal is not specific.
Measurable: Our objectives must be quantifiable or qualifiable. We must associate them with a value, a number, a level… something that makes it possible to determine whether or not we are getting closer to our objectives. “Learning more vocabulary in Spanish” for example is not a measurable objective. After how many words will we consider that we have reached our goal? We cannot know because the objective is not measurable.
Ambitious: Our goals must be ambitious, they must inspire us and make us dream. They have to be worth it, otherwise it will be hard to find the energy and motivation to work on them.
Realistic: If we want to achieve our goals, we must be convinced that we have a reasonable chance of achieving them. If we take an unrealistic goal, we will not really believe in our ability to accomplish it and we will not give 100%.
Temporal: A goal that is not temporal is a goal on which we procrastinate. Setting a deadline is crucial to creating a sense of urgency and pushing yourself to work.
Step 2: Define lag measures to achieve your objectives
Once we have defined our SMART objectives, we must define lag measures.
Lag measures are metrics that allow us to measure our progress towards our goals. These are usually the things that concern us the most:
Our turnover, our profit, the number of visitors to our site, the number of contracts signed, the number of kilos lost… are lag measures.
Lag measures give us information about our past performance. These are things over which we no longer have any power.
For example, when we look at the income we generated this month, the figure we see listed is the result of the efforts we made during the month. This is a reflection of the past and there is nothing more that can be done to influence this number.
Step 3: Define lead measures to reach our lag measures
Lead measures are things that we directly control. These are all the actions we take to achieve our goals.
If, for example, our objective is to increase our turnover by 35% by the end of the year, our lead measures can be the number of prospects that we contact by email or the number of customers that we call to sell them our products.
These are all things that you can directly influence and that predict the success you will have.
To achieve our objectives, we must constantly optimize our lead measures because they are what produce our results.
We often tend to focus on our objectives when in reality we should rather focus on our lead measures.
Rather than focusing on the volume of traffic to our site, we should instead focus on the quality of the articles we write and how to distribute them to the right targets.
Rather than constantly looking at the turnover we generate, we should instead seek to find innovative ways to obtain new prospects and work on the way we approach them.
Rather than staring at the scale to see if you’ve lost weight, you should instead focus on how many miles you run, how many reps you do in the gym, and the number of healthy meals prepared.
Because if we constantly optimize our lead measures, our lag measures and our objectives will follow on their own.
