How to Achieve Meaning and Purpose in Your Life
You might not be surprised to learn that research shows that people whose lives have meaning and purpose are happier than those who don’t. So how do you give meaning to your life?
People for whom life makes sense seem to live longer. They seem to cope better with the losses and difficulties encountered during their lives. Also, they have a greater sense of satisfaction. And it even seems to protect them from the cognitive decline that comes with aging.
Imperative to your purpose is to realise that your life has a purpose. That you have come to this place, at this time, for a reason. And that you are meant to accomplish something great! Something that will impact the world and the lives of many. Some of the most incredible people in history have felt that they have come to this world for a reason. They have felt that their destiny is not just to live, but to accomplish something great.
You can start by making a list of things you love to do. It could be anything from volunteering, travelling, a sport or hobby you have always wanted to learn or a sport you want to be better at, to spending time with family and friends. Start doing one of them now and take it from there. Make sure you read more and learn as much as possible about what truly inspires you.
Return to your values
One does not find the meaning of a life by looking for a large poster that reads: “Here is your purpose”. This reason for being is rather built by many small choices that you make, by the values that you choose to express.
You can deliberately choose to do any action in a meaningful way: an opportunity to embody your values. Thus, a cleaner in a hospital may choose to see yourself as an important part of the patient’s healing process (which he really is) and as a result, demonstrate kindness and professionalism in your work.
However, if what you’re doing really doesn’t align with your values, if it doesn’t make sense to you, then maybe it’s time to think about a career transition. It could save your life! If you feel a little uncertain about finding meaning in your life, then you could take an activity: the “photo-journal”
It’s a great way to discover the meaning that is already in your life. Here’s what you need to do:
Take 10 to 12 photos of “what gives or could give meaning to his life”. It can be places, people, things, moments or even other photos. As you take photos, write down for each what it means to you and how important it is in your daily life, or how you hope it will contribute to giving meaning to your life in the coming.
Once the exercise is complete, observe the photos you have taken and what you have written for each one. Observe what emerges. Observe recurring themes. Then in a few words, write down what it means to you.
Now, as your day progresses, observe when you have the opportunity to take meaningful action on what is important to you and see what happens.
A simple moment but one that has deep meaning. It is about relationships, affection and family tradition.
