Find and watch 2D 3D movies in Oculus VR headsets

In this tutorial, I suggest you take a tour of the different applications to watch a 2D series, a 3D video or a 360 ° VR movie in your Oculus Quest. And this, even lying in the dark, headphones on the ears.

You will also discover where to find 3D movies, techniques to download and watch them from simple solutions to advanced techniques for downloading files from PC or via a Torrent server.

Note: the proposed solutions obviously require that you are owners or authorized to access the works.

Basic Solution: home of the Oculus Quest

The first solution is to turn on your Quest and with the Explorer tab to consult the “multimedia aps” available. For the moment, little choice, but the means to discover the possibilities of films and animations in virtual reality.

Oculus TV

A homemade player that actually gives you access to several video player apps. Unfortunately, some are limited to the US market. In France, you can access:

The Oculus TV application evolves regularly (but this remains very limited) by taking advantage of the options previously reserved for the Oculus Gallery.

This official application allows you to upload your own video content to the Quest, but also to access the content of your various social networks (including photos).

Note: it should completely disappear for 2025 from the Oculus Store to integrate its features directly into the Oculus Tv app.

Here we find Netflix and Amazon Prime video, but also some VOD services like FandagNOW, unfortunately not currently available in France.

With these paid services, you can watch your 2D movies and series in your VR headset. Very little 3D production. But, a great way to enjoy your subscriptions while being totally isolated from your surroundings.

Amazon Prime Video

Certainly the most interesting Streaming service, because offered in the Amazon Prime subscription at 49 $ per year (in addition to Amazon Music and Twitch Prime). I find the interface in the Quest much more sophisticated than that of Netflix.

Netflix

Well, this is simply your Netflix movies and series that are displayed on a screen in your Oculus headset. A few small adjustments allow you to resize the screen and its tilt.

As I struggled a bit to find how to access all the movies in VR on Steam, I give you a magic link to find them all (around forty films for VR headsets). In fact Steam launched its own VR video player app in 2013 “Steam 360 Video”. You can download to your pc here.

Please note that most are paid, not very expensive but a small contribution often around one dollar is required. Because it’s Wednesday, at the end of the articles I put a list of all the free VR movies I found (there is no Avatar 3D VR).

To enjoy Steam, you need a PC, a cable to connect it to your Quest (Oculus Link or not) or Virtual Desktop to enjoy it wirelessly.

A free application that is a bit like a cinema with lots of rooms.

• You can join other people’s rooms and find out what they’re up to. The fun side is that you can bring together up to 12 people who can interact in the virtual cinema room.
• You can stream content from your PC to your personal room (public or private). Watch your PC screen on huge virtual screens! Multi-monitoring support allows for up to three virtual displays, all of which can be customized according to their shape or size.
• Finally, Bigscree regularly offers special screenings, as was the case with Titanic 3D VR for Valentine’s Day and most recently on June 13, 2023 with the film Selma (only in the USA, until June 30 in free access).

There are other video players for Oculus Quest like Moonlight, Deo VR, ALVR, Pigasus VR Media Player or Virtual Desktop to watch your movies in the Quest smart health connected to a PC.

The best solution to watch and find (torrent) movies on Quest

Skybox + Flud + Torrent

Skybox is an application that I presented to you in detail, it allows you to watch a large number of downloaded movie formats or directly access those on your PC while smart health connected to the same Wifi network.

Originally launched free of charge, the Skybox app has since March 15, 2023 become payable at $ 14.99. You can also try DeoVR, which is less comprehensive, but which is still free. Once Skybox is installed, you can find 3D movies online right on your Oculus Quest and download them with a trick using additional free apps. This technique uses the fact that the Oculus is made on an Android smartphone basis.

TSE, the app to find and download torrent on Quest

For this you will need several applications:

• Skybox which will serve as a 2D or 3D player (presentation)
• SideQuest (the complete tutorial) to install in sideload at least the following two applications:
• Flud. This free app allows you to download the torrent links in sequential mode that you will find with the following app:
• Torrent search engine to search (and find) 3D movies or 360 ° videos.
• Torrent search engine an alternative to Torrent Search Engine to unblock torrent links (that’s not good).

Quick tutorial to download movies with a Torrent server

• Once Flud and Torrent Search Engine have been copied to your Oculus Quest, launch Torrent Search which you will find in the unknown sources of your Quest library
• Use the Torrent Links search engine (there is everything, in all languages)
• Click on the movie or video you want to add and automatically Flud will open.
• Before activating the download, it is strongly recommended to validate the option of sequential loading. Take the opportunity to select (create) a Skybox directory or use the Quest “movie” directory. The film will therefore be directly accessible when it opens.
• Patiently wait for the file to load and launch Skybox (or another video player) to watch your movie directly in your headphones.

Watch your Blu-Rays movies in the Oculus Quest or Oculus Go

You will again need a PC and Skybox, as well as a Blu-Rays player and free software to convert your Blu-Rays into a file compatible with your Quest. You will need to be patient and have free space on your PC. It’s about making video in MKV format and audio in AC3.

• AVISYNTH allows you to open the files on your Blu-Rays and to select the desired movie and audio as well as the subtitles.
• MakeMKV converted to MKV.
• BD3D2MK3D transforms the film to give it the 3D effect.

With Skybox or Netflix, you can tilt the cinema screen to put it in the correct line of vision while lying down. To be able to watch your film in the dark, you must then switch to developer mode, and simply deactivate the Guardian.
