After a successful first trial, Facebook, which bought Oculus VR in 2014, unveils its new virtual reality headset, the Oculus Quest 2. A wireless virtual reality headset and its two Oculus Touch controllers.
The headset is sold in two copies, the first at 64 GB and the second at 256 GB of internal memory. The Oculus Quest 2 is primarily dedicated to mobile use through access to the Oculus game library. No computer, console, or smartphone is required to operate the headset. The latter works autonomously, but because yes there is a but, you will still need a smartphone to launch the free Oculus application on the Apple Store and Google Play and have a Facebook account!
You can, however, access a wider choice of games, if you decide to purchase a cable to connect it to your computer. If the official cable costs a hundred euros, a copy sold for just under thirty euros is more than enough to do the job.

The accessories
In terms of accessories, I also fell for the carrying case to best protect the device and its two controllers. I am also thinking of buying the elite strap in the next few months, we will talk about it again later in the article to better understand its usefulness. There are therefore two helmets and a multitude of official accessories sold separately:

Beat Saber, the most popular virtual reality game sold € 29.99 excluding promotions and sales. A rhythm game that alone can convince you to buy a virtual reality headset.
Population: ONE, a battle royale (like Fortnite) in virtual reality sold for € 29.99 excluding promotions and sales.
Echo VR, a weightless virtual reality ball game available for free.
The Climb 2, the upcoming climbing game. The first opus is on sale at € 29.99 excluding promotions and sales.
Jurassic World Aftermath, a cel-shading survival game set in the licensed Jurrasic Parc universe, also due out soon.
On the facade, we can observe the 4 cameras, which make it possible to capture the environment and trace movements. They also serve as feedback in certain cases such as when the player must draw his playing area in his real environment.
The buttons and connections are not numerous, but largely sufficient. Thus we find on the left side a headphone jack, a USB C port to recharge the headset and to connect it to your computer. On the right side, an LED to inform the state of the headset (charging or on) and the button to turn it on and off.
Below, on the right at the nose, the button to adjust the volume and finally on the right the button that turns the headphones on and off.
In condition, once installed on the head and properly adjusted, both in terms of the space between the lenses on 3 levels and thanks to the two straps on the head in depth and around, the helmet holds up rather well.
But it doesn’t last when you move around too much with certain games like Beat Saber! This is where the elite strap comes in which should offer more comfort and also a better fit on the head. It will be tested in an update of this article in a few weeks because I haven’t bought it yet.
Start up
First, you will need to create an Oculus account, using your Facebook account! Which will store purchases on the Oculus store. Then come the updates, downloading a free game, and it’s time to play!
You will first have to set up a play area or rather a “Guardian” limit by setting the limit on the ground and then around the player by making a path with an Oculus Touch controller around you. This zone will be saved for the next sessions, but it will of course be possible to modify it easily.
A play zone of 2 meters by 2 meters is recommended for “roomscale” games and experiences and of 1 meter by 1 meter for “stationary” experiences standing and sitting. You must of course be careful not to have an object or a wall too close, at the risk of hurting yourself or breaking the equipment. If you are about to break out of this limit, grid warnings will let you be warned and if you get out of it, a message will prompt you to either re-draw a “roomscale” limit or opt for a stationary limit instead.
A “roomscale” limit allows you to enjoy non-stationary experiences where you will have to play standing up, moving around in the given space. On the contrary, the “stationary” limit is dedicated to games and experiments which can be performed on a chair or standing, but without moving, for example on a swivel chair. On the game sheet, the game mode is displayed “Sitting” “Standing” “Roomscale”. Think about it!
Another essential information that can be found on the game sheet is the comfort index! Rated on 4 points, “Comfortable”, “Moderate”, “Intense” or “No rating”. For example, we will find in the Intense category, experiences such as roller caster or The Climb, the climbing game we talked about previously while there will generally be “Moderate” on most games and for experiences. to watch or Tilt Brush the 3D drawing game the index “Comfortable”. This notion should be taken into account when putting behind the Oculus Quest 2 someone who has never tried virtual reality.
We quickly adapt to this new helmet, light, compact and comfortable. It must be said that for my part I went from the very first Oculus in its dev version, to the first HTC Vive and its too many cables and sensors to a fully wireless headset and without the need for a console or a computer to aside and that is really the big advantage of the product.
Games ?
There are a few classics in the game library that I can only recommend for testing them either on the Oculus Quest 2 or other VR headsets.

Play your PC / Steam games
There are of course a multitude of titles, but not as many as on Steam! This is where the most interesting accessory comes in, finally its copy given that the official version costs a hundred euros, the Oculus Link cable!
It connects to USB C on the headphones and USB 3 on a computer (USB with blue edges). This small cable allows access to all the content on your computer and available in virtual reality.
Of course, you must have a computer that can run such games, if not, limit yourself to the catalog built into the headset. Virtual reality games are generally quite greedy! Oculus recommends a computer with at least 8GB of random access memory (RAM), an Intel i5-4590 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or higher processor, all running Windows 10 and especially with at least one available USB 3 port. Already having a well-stocked Steam library, I was able in a few clicks to transfer my games from Steam to my Oculus library to enjoy on my Oculus Quest 2.
So no need to buy Beat Saber and the rest of the games you already have on your computer again! Likewise, it is now possible to enjoy indie titles or headlines that are not available on the Oculus platform either because Facebook refused or not available for other reasons. In addition, if you change your virtual reality headset, you won’t lose your games and you can play them on an Oculus, HTC Vive or any other headset that would be compatible in the future while with the Oculus store, you limit yourself to Oculus devices. I take this opportunity to recommend a few games:

- No Man’s Sky
- Subnautica
Conclusion
The Oculus Quest is the headset that aims to be the general public because it does not require additional equipment to function unlike the competition. However, it is much more interesting if you use it with a computer that allows you to run virtual reality games that you already own or prefer to have on your computer. If you want to opt for this second solution, I invite you to opt for the 64 GB headset, less expensive and the unofficial version of the cable at just under $30 in its 5 meter version, which is more than sufficient.
