Not good enough: HTC's smartwatch won't come until 2015

HTC actually wanted to bring a wearable device to the market this fall, which in all likelihood is a smartwatch. The tech press had suspected this for a long time. This has now been confirmed by Jason Mackenzie, head of HTC America, on the tech blog Re / code. With the launch of the alleged smartwatch this year, however, it will be nothing: According to Mackenzie, the product simply did not finish ("ended up just not being ready").

Drew Bamford, head of HTC's Creative Labs development department, wants to ensure that HTC launches a product that is worth putting on your wrist: "When we come to market with our product we want to make sure the product has a strong point of view and there is a really compelling reason to strap it on your wrist."

In his opinion, smartwatches that are already available have so far "earned no space on the wrist". According to him, no manufacturer has yet managed to build a usable wearable – “doing it right”, as he puts it.

More detailed information on the company's wearable device strategy is not planned to be published until early 2015. Until then, the competition – so far in the form of, for example, LG's G Watch and G Watch R, Samsung's Smartwatch Armada, the Asus Zenwatch and Motorola's Moto 360 – will be much larger. The Apple Watch should also appear in early 2015. And then HTC has to present a really big hit, so as not to lag behind the wearable market with its smartwatch.

Even if there is no smartwatch to admire at the event: HTC will show at least two interesting devices today. We are expecting a new selfie smartphone and an action cam. We report live from New York about the new mobile devices.

I am happy with my LG G Watch – by the way, the current generation of wearables is not that terrible. How do you see it? The following photo gallery shows the current smartwatches again.

Sony Smartwatch 2

Sony is an old hand in the field of smart watches. The Smartwatch 2 is actually the company's third generation of smartwatches (after Live View and the first Sony Smartwatch). The Smartwatch 2 is still very popular – the main reasons for this are the now fairly humane price around 100 euros and a large selection of apps. Sony uses a modified Android as the operating system, the 1.6-inch display has a resolution of 220 × 176 pixels. The gadget connects to the cell phone via NFC and Bluetooth 3.0. As with most smartwatches, it is a companion device, but it works to a certain extent independently: some apps work even without a smart health connected smartphone.
