NewsDrop # 30: Magic Leap, new Moto 360, new HTC CEO and more

If you want to read the information from the video again in detail, you can find the video here again as a transcription:

Hello to ABSMARTHEALTH, welcome to episode 30 of the NewsDrop. Today with a change of leadership at HTC, with an impressive augmented reality demo, with luxury smartwatches from Tag Heuer and Gucci, with a possible successor to the Moto 360, with smart shoes and with Darth Vader, who is robbing a bank. But one after anonther.

HTC changes CEO: Peter Chou resigns after more than ten years at the top. However, Chou remains in the company and is to take over the leadership of the "HTC Future Development Lab". It is replaced by HTC co-founder Cher Wang, who, together with Chou, hums the company song on stage.

As TheVerge reports, Cher Wang wants to broaden HTC. We have already seen examples of this course, for example with the Re camera and of course the Vive virtual reality headset.

Augmented instead of virtual reality is available at Magic Leap, the start-up that came out of nowhere last fall and collected investments of $ 542 million, including largely from Google. Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz was supposed to talk about the mysterious company at the TED conference this week – and canceled the last minute appearance.

Magic Leap has published a trailer that gives an insight into the project: The AR glasses project objects into the user's field of vision. And then, for example, the player's office is attacked by robots and he has to defend himself with wild bangs. That looks impressive – and is very reminiscent of the capabilities of Microsoft's HoloLens.

Speaking of Microsoft: At the beginning of the week there was a big fuss about Microsoft apparently giving away Windows 10 – not only to owners of legal versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8, but also to pirates. However, it seems to have been a misunderstanding: An update to Windows 10 should be possible, but these Windows copies are then "legal", Microsoft did not want to explicitly confirm. It is conceivable, for example, that Microsoft then regularly reminds the user to legalize his dirty copy by paying in the Windows Store.

The next luxury smartwatch now follows the up to 18,000 euros expensive Apple Watch. At least sometime. Tag Heuer announced at the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair that it was developing an Android Wear watch together with Google and Intel. Unfortunately, details or even technical data are in short supply, but the associated Intel press release is full of marketing BlaBla à la "The result of our partnership with TAG Heuer and Google will be a distinctive and extraordinary smartwatch that sets completely new standards" Bullshit bingo!

I also found it interesting that TheVerge said that Google or Android Wear needs iPhone support. Because the majority of well-off people who buy luxury smartwatches simply use iPhones.

After all, Android Wear or Android has already got another feature: If you can't find your phone right now, you can let the paired Android smartphone start roaring from the watch. This can be done either with a new menu entry or by voice input with "Ok Google, Start, Find my phone"

If it is up to Bosch, it could also work with your toolbox in the future. For example, the Bosch Power Tools division is to launch a technology this year that will allow craftsmen to check that their toolboxes are complete. There will also be measuring devices with a smartphone app and mobile-controlled robotic lawn mowers.

Back to the smartwatches: An image has appeared on the Internet that supposedly shows a sample case full of bracelets and cases of the Moto 360 successor. Accordingly, the next Motorola smartwatch could come in two different sizes, more designs, and additional bracelets. In addition, it looks almost as if the smartwatch will even support standard bracelets in the future.

Gucci is also said to have a luxury smartwatch. The Italian fashion label is teaming up with the former black-eyed peas front man will.i.am, whose smartwatch Review called Puls was completely torn apart in the air.

And while we're in the fashion world, how about a smart shoe? The Volvorii Smart Shoe has an integrated e-ink display, which should be able to adapt to the current style of clothing. The Lithuanian iShüu Technologies is currently looking for supporters on IndieGoGo for the project, starting from $ 249 plus $ 50 international shipping.

There is no wearable from OnePlus – and for the time being no new cell phone. The Chinese manufacturer, which became known last year for its self-styled flagship killer One, has teased a new product for April with three puzzling pictures.

What could it be? To a camera? A game console à la Ouya? Contrary to Hanson Lee's assumption in the OnePlus forum, it probably won't be a laser vibrator. Then more cats or kebabs? We'll know more next month.

We also know more about the new Huawei flagship in April. The Chinese sent out invitations to an event in London on April 15th. Presumably the new Huawei P8 is presented here, supposedly with a 5.2-inch full HD display, Kirin 930 octa-core, 13-megapixel camera and so on and so on. We are on site and report for you with live blog, hands-on video and so on.

Elon Musk told the press yesterday that Tesla will roll out a software update for the Model S over the next three months that includes an autopilot function. However, the feature will initially only be available on highways – in urban areas, the reliability is not yet high enough.

Tesla could soon be facing competition – from Richard Branson. The Virgin founder told Bloomberg this week that they have teams of people trying to develop electric cars. You never know – Virgin might eventually compete with Tesla in the auto business. By the way, Virgin is already starting in the electric racing series Formula E with its own racing team.

Yes, our generation has already suffered damage. Somebody gets shot in Arizona and what's his first reaction? Not about: doctor! Hospital! Help !, but: take a selfie! Yay. The same goes for this lady after surviving a plane crash.

And after his death star was powdered and he was gnawing on the hunger, Darth Vader also raided a bank this week. After all, without a selfie with a gun and a scared bank employee.

What else is there to say about us? Kamal has tried an iOS beta version of the MixRadio service, which was formerly only available for Lumia smartphones. MixRadio will be available for iOS and Android in the future. You can find out what the music service has in store here.

And then I would like to point out once again to our current gadget of the week, which with a little luck you can win with us. In keeping with the spring-like weather, I have a weather station for you. You can find out what the Netatmo Urban Weather Station can do and how it works by winning in our current Gadget of the Week video. Good luck.

That's all for today. If you liked this episode, then I'm happy to give you a thumbs up – and of course your comments anyway. And if you don’t want to miss any ABSMARTHEALTH videos, subscribe to us. Thank you for watching, have a nice weekend and see you next Wednesday if you want – I won't be there next week from Wednesday, so the NewsDrop has to be canceled.
