We’ve been hearing about an artificial iris for a while. Looking like smart contact lenses, this iris is not yet finalized but research has made very big progress lately.
Besides, artificial iris could quickly become a reality thanks to the work of researchers from the University of Ghent. They are working hard on the development of this technology.
Herbert com Smet’s group of researchers has been working for some time, with grants from the European Union, on the initial applications of this product. Some preliminary results were presented this week at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting. We were able to discover the ring road there. Inside a lens, a tiny monochrome LCD screen that can be adjusted to vary opacities and patterns.
To date, the models offered which can be adjusted to vary the opacities and patterns. to work properly. They are not intended to form images, but rather to darken the entire field of vision for those who cannot do it themselves. Some people suffer from disturbances that limit the ability of their eye's iris to contract or dilate the pupil. Some also fail to control the amount of light admitted to reach the retina. This causes pain or even serious damage to the iris.
This contact lens which automatically changes the brightness would solve the problem. This is exactly what Herbert com Smet’s team created. To date, the product therefore exists but must still pass numerous tests before being marketed. Many tests, including security, have yet to be performed.
