If we admit today that there really is no such thing as "pests", since all species have their place in the ecosystem, it remains however very unpleasant to undergo the invasion of mice, or worse, rats , in his health home. These small creatures tend to multiply very quickly (on average 4 to 8 litters from 7 to 14 young per year), and to feed on everything: your stored food, but also your insulation, when they do not cut the electric wires in the walls. Via their droppings, their contact or their bite, they can transmit many diseases (leptospirosis, salmonellosis, Haverhill fever, tularemia, meningitis, infectious jaundice, bubonic plague, etc.), but they can also be the source of other dangers such as gas leaks, fires or short circuits. Rats can even dig galleries capable of damaging the foundations of a house. I even had the case in my car, the manufacturers having had the good idea to use starch-based pipes (for the ecology!). Whether in the countryside or in the city, everyone can unfortunately face the problem. However, there are different methods to fight against these rodents…
You should know that the law requires, both from individuals and professionals, the use of rat extermination in the presence of these animals (mouse, sewer rat, black rat, etc.) in a room (circular of August 9, 1978, article 125.1 and 130.5). At the local level, there is not one, but a multitude of regulations specific to each department, then each commune. Some cities may require regular control of rat infestation, while others may offer free rodent disposal services. There are nevertheless three identical principles almost everywhere:
- Prevention: individuals and communities must guard against the accumulation of litter, which attracts rats a lot
- The verification: occupants are required to maintain a state of cleanliness and to check all areas likely to be affected by the presence of rodents (garbage cans, cellars, courtyards, warehouses, etc.) If their presence is detected, it must be immediately report to the owner of the premises, who must take appropriate measures himself.
- Rat control. In the event of the proven presence of rats or mice, owners and occupants are obliged to take the necessary measures to ensure their elimination and to ensure that an invasion does not recur.
The intervention of a rat extermination company is not imposed on individuals, who are entitled to take the necessary measures themselves. There are indeed several ways to get rid of this type of problem.
Prevention
For starters, nothing beats prevention. In other words, do everything not to attract them and not let them penetrate. It is generally common sense, but it is worth remembering:
- Plug all holes, cracks, openings in the house, using steel wool, metal, or concrete (never use wood or rubber, easy to gnaw). A mouse can sneak into a hole only 5mm in diameter!
- Install rodent screens.
- Close the bins tightly and do not leave food lying around.
- Do not create areas that can serve as shelter or nest (wood pile at least 30 m from the house, do not pile up all kinds of debris, compost away from the house, regularly clean often neglected areas such as cellar , basement, attic …
If despite these precautions rodents take up residence with you, it will be advisable to counter attack via different methods.
Repellents
A simple way to set up: create conditions that make the place unbearable for these little animals. Rodents' ears are very sensitive to ultrasound, so you can get devices that release waves adapted to this species to make them flee. There are boxes to plug into the sector, or even battery, which emit ultrasound at regular intervals (this is for example what I have set up in my cars). You will not kill them, they will simply go elsewhere. Only drawback: depending on the area to be protected, it may be necessary to have several boxes.
These critters also have a highly developed sense of smell, so it is also possible to repel them thanks to certain scents, for example via a diffuser of essential oils, as desired: clary sage, peppermint, bay leaf, garlic, lavender or eucalyptus.
Deadly bait
If the ultrasonic repellant does not work, a more expeditious method will be the deadly bait. You can use simple recipes, such as a solution of plaster and flour, or sugar and quicklime, with a cup of water next to it. These product pairs create swelling reactions in these animals, leading to their death. Coca Cola is also recognized for its power of effective rodent control (when you are told that it is not good for health 😉
There are also products sold commercially. Be careful though, because rodenticide is a dangerous chemical, usually based on arsenic, which kills rodents on the spot (and also most of the stray insects in your health home). Safety measures are therefore necessary, in particular by protecting the food protected from this rodenticide.
The traps
You can also opt for the deadly bait technique, by setting traps. These can be mechanical and sticky dobbies, or electrical traps. The good old "mouse trap" (or rat trap, a little larger), also does the job very well: used with cheese, cereals, or food product debris to attract them, all installed at a place of passage, generally causes a sensation!
Be careful however, the use of mechanical dobbies and electrical traps are sometimes subject to discussion since bedbugs can be expelled from the rat thus captured.
Call a pest control professional
If all these methods have not worked, it will only remain to call a professional, asking for a deratization quote, going through a comparison site like stop-rongeurs.com for example. Depending on the place to be cleaned, whether it is a residence, a technical room, a professional building, etc. the professional will adopt the right technique.
Anyway, do not take this threat lightly, because the local will quickly be invaded if you do not react quickly!
