Unboxing of the Huawei Watch

The display looks nothing like those previously known for smartwatches, and for good reason! That looks like more to a classic luxury watch case. A bit like Russian dolls, a first box protects the case, which once out is both simple and elegant.

With its smartwatch, presented with great fanfare at the Mobile World Congress 2015 last March, the Chinese manufacturer definitely intends set up in this new market and compete with Motorola's Moto 360.

Huawei Watch design & ergonomics

As expected, the watch is really pleasing to the eye. The Chinese company has perfectly managed to reconcile technology and fashion with this first model. Pretty close to a classic watch design due to its round shape, this is where the Huawei Watch first stands out.

We find a 1.4 inch AMOLED screen with a 400 x 400 resolution or 286 ppi. The whole thing is powered by a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm APQ8026 processor associated to 512 MB RAM. Side 4 GB storage available. The device running Android Wear, one of the only bad points remains the 300 mAh battery.

Unlike some competitive products, the Huawei Watch has remained sober. Concerning protection, the designers have equipped their product with a glass made from scratch resistant sapphire crystal, surrounded bya stainless steel frame. The watch is not excessively heavy to wear, and the dial does not eat the whole wrist.

As for the inside of the watch, no less than 40 faces will be available at the exit : blue, gray, white, black, there will be something for everyone. In terms of colors, there are three (black, silver and gold), in addition to two female versions unveiled at CES 2016: Jewel and Elegant. Obviously, the price varies according to the edition chosen.

Android Wear app on the Huawei Watch

Once the watch has been charged a minimum, it's time to pair with the smartphone. The owners ofiPhone will need to download Android Wear in order to be able to configure their smartwatch. The Huawei Watch gives all the instructions necessary for the connection between the two devices. In activating Bluetooth, they will be able to connect and synchronize. Patience will be required, especially if the watch cannot find the phone the first time.

However the application is clear and fluid. No untimely crash, which is positive. The stage is quite quick and you don't waste any time before you can enjoy the watch.

Using the Huawei Watch

Coupled with the smartphone, we can finally use the watch. If without combining functions such as heart rate or the step counter works, the step is necessary, otherwise unable to display the correct time (a roof for a watch). Certainly, the principle of a smartwatch is to work with the mobile phone, nevertheless this point highlights one of the shortcomings of smartwatches: the lack of autonomy vis-à-vis smartphones.

Navigation is done by swiping up, down, right and left giving access to shortcuts depending on the movement performed. We will be able to remove the notifications by dragging them down, for example. No rotary dial like with the Samsung Gear S2, just the touch screen. By swiping twice to the left, you get to their contact list. A single swipe brings you to the menu and to the different applications available, for example Amazon, calendar,a heart rate, barometric and gyroscopic motion sensor…

The button on the side of the watch will serve to return to the main interface. This can be changed from the settings or simply by pressing it for a few seconds. Forty different interfaces will then be displayed, the user is spoiled for choice.

Another navigation option: voice, thanks to Google voice control which works overall well. Thanks to him, we will be able to dictate messages to the watch which will take care of transcribing them and sending them, or even call a person. This feature is quite funny, when we call someone or we are called, it is possible to start a kind of deaf conversation, where it is possible to hear the other party without being able to exchange speaking with him.

Like other smart health connected watches on the market, it may be a little light in terms of autonomy. Huawei has opted for a 300 mAh battery, which is expected to last two full days in normal use. Unfortunately, it turns out that a recharge keeps the watch more stable for a day and a half, about thirty hours. A small defect that all watches share anyway on the market today. Nevertheless this little handicap is compensated by the rapid recharging of this battery, able to go from 0 to 80% recharge in just 45 minutes. Another black point for the Chinese product: no NFC connectivity is available on this smartwatch, which may not work in its favor with buyers still undecided on their future smart health watch. Because who says no NFC says pcontactless payment ace, and yet this is a major selling point, especially across the Atlantic where these techniques are much more democratized. Even if in France, consumers are a little cautious, it is a safe bet that this technique will become more and more used in the long term. Pity.

Facing the competition: Huawei Watch VERSUS Samsung Gear S2?

The Huawei smartwatch faces a serious competitor: the Samsung Gear S2 smart health connected watch. Because if both offer health monitoring through pedometer or heart rate sensor functions, they differ in terms of some technical characteristics. At Samsung, the smartwatch offers a wireless charging function, which is not present at Huawei, moreover, the smart health connected watch Samsung Gear S2 has a longer battery life than the Huawei Watch. Even if these two smart health connected watches seem identical, the smartwatch developed by Samsung still has a memory capacity of 1.5 GB, which still represents almost double the memory capacity of the Huawei Swatch.

And that's without mentioning the navigation ring on the Gear S2 dial, the big plus of the Samsung smartwatch that completely reinvented the navigation system. Only advantage of the Huawei Watch: its luxury side.

Overview

Design: One of the key points of the watch. Both sober and elegant, an excellent combination of fashion and technology, the wide choice of models should appeal to potential buyers.
Application : Very clear and simple to use, it does not however bring a lot of new features to the watch, but the ones offered already work very well.
Use : Once you are used to the navigation system, you appreciate the features present, being able to quickly change the interface and voice control. This works well when used to dictate messages. Small quibbles, but impossible to manually set the time of the watch, it is absolutely necessary to connect the phone for this to be done. The autonomy as for many smartwatches is a little low, but the fast recharging time compensates for this defect.
Value for money: The price of the Huawei Watch remains in the average of other watches, especially the latest watch from Samsung and is quite correct in view of the features it offers and its really nice design.
