Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose an Exercise Bike?

Choosing the right exercise bike means first knowing the desired objectives: Is it a resumption of physical activity? A physical interview? Re-education ? Sports preparation?

Each exercise bike is designed to provide optimal comfort for a defined purpose of use. The latter is therefore the 1st element that should guide your choice.

Sports use? Your back will then be tilted forward to facilitate the pedaling power. Softer practice to support a weight loss goal? You can then enjoy a bike with a straight back position. The aim of this guide is to assist you in the best possible way in choosing a bike suited to your practice and your expectations.

It is easily used at home, whenever you want, without time and weather constraints. The exercise bike can be used by beginners, intermediate and experienced athletes, men and women. It’s about finding the model that best suits your needs.

For weight loss, dietary monitoring such as reducing calorie intake must be combined with regular exercise.

The exercise bike allows you to work the muscles of the thighs, glutes and calves, as well as to work the cardiovascular system and to burn fat.
It has the great advantage of having no impact on the joints, thus protecting you from the risk of injury.

The budget

How much can you put? Take out your calculator or your budget to find out how much you can save. Avoid bicycles under 70-80 € which will certainly disappoint you.

Count 100 € for an entry-level and up to several hundred euros for apartment bikes with multiple options such as easily foldable and stowable or with activity monitoring screen, comfortable seats, quality of manufacture of the frame or accessories such as pedals or the type of resistance and its simplicity or complexity to modify … A beginner can be satisfied with a bike between 100 and 200 €. The best seller in its class this year (and for beginners) is the F-Bike 200B from Ultrasport.

The goal

Like traditional bikes, there are different practice positions on exercise bikes. Three main positions meet different uses:

Gentle strengthening and rehabilitation
In the context of gentle strengthening or rehabilitation, the need is for comfort. Lumbar comfort is therefore a priority, more than pedaling power. This need will translate into a bicycle offering the straightest possible back in use.

Cardio use

For cardio practice with longer sessions (> 30mn), the user needs to be able to regularly change the position of the back during practice. In order to combine endurance and comfort, the compromise is then balanced between position of the back and pedaling power. This “mixed” position is most prevalent today.

Performance use

For “performance” use, sports preparation and / or more intense cardio work, it is the pedaling power that is criterion No. 1. The user’s position is then studied to allow maximum pedaling power to be released, in line with the practice objective. The back is then leaned more sharply forward.

Performances

There are currently 3 technologies for the resistance system of exercise bikes.

1) The first most common system is the magnetic bicycle: magnets located near a metal wheel create resistance. The further the magnets are from the wheel, the less resistant the bike is. Conversely, the closer the magnets are to the wheel, the more resistance the bike gives to the exercise.
To bring the magnets closer or further, several possibilities depending on the magnetic bike models:

Either manually: a manual selection command drives a cable which will move the magnets away or closer together. This is called a magnetic bicycle with manual resistance. The mechanical adjustment offers great simplicity: by turning the dial, the user activates a cable which brings a magnet closer to the inertia wheel, causing greater resistance, therefore more ” difficulty ‘in pedaling.
Either motorized: the magnets are controlled by servomotors and “+” or “-” buttons on the bicycle console therefore make it possible to vary the resistance of the bicycle. This is called a magnetic motorized resistance bicycle. The “motorized” setting allows you to adjust the pedaling difficulty directly from the bike screen. The advantage of this system is twofold: the difficulty levels are more numerous, and only this system makes it possible to have programs on the bike, “sports courses” with automatic variations of difficulty for a varied effort. The programs meet different goals (burn calories, prepare for exercise, etc.)
2) The second resistance technology for bicycles is electromagnetic resistance. We are talking about electromagnetic bikes. The principle: a coil of copper wires, located near a metal wheel, is traversed by an electric current. The magnetic field thus creates resistance against the metal wheel. Since the coil is fixed in relation to the wheel, it is the intensity that travels through it that allows the resistance to vary. This system allows for more level of resistance settings and a more linear progression. However, to operate, the bicycle must be plugged into the mains, unless it is equipped with a self-generating electricity system.
Exercise bikes that have this braking technology are called “ergometers”. Indeed, it is the only technology that can quantify the muscular work provided. This work is measured in Watt.

3) Finally, the third resistance technology, is mechanical resistance by friction: a roller, a belt or pads rub against the inertia wheel to create resistance. Older technology, it is hardly used on classic exercise bikes anymore. On the other hand, it is still widely used on spinning bikes because it allows for greater resistance.

The bike display

The console controls the exercise bike. It has a display and controls that will give you access to all the features of your exercise bike.

All the consoles will give you basic information: speed, distance covered, practice time, average calories burned. Depending on the model, the heart rate will also be present (to obtain the latter with maximum precision, prefer the models supplied with a heart rate monitor)

Then, the differences are mainly related to the number of programs present, the compatibility offered (coaching, MP3, etc.) and the ease of reading information (screen size, backlighting)

The display

The display of bike information is done on the console. It allows you to control and follow your work for more motivating and effective workouts. The display can be single-screen or multi-screen. The information that can be displayed is: speed, duration, kilometers traveled, calories burned, heart rate, temperature, current program or profile, intensity of resistance. The scan function allows you to alternate the display of information on a screen. Some displays are backlit and / or color.

The programs

The programs make it possible to vary the exercises using pre-recorded profiles. The bike will automatically adapt the resistance according to the selected profile (simulation of a hilly course, interval training, etc.). In order to be able to vary your workouts and find motivation over the weeks, choose a bike with at least 6 or 8 programs. (The Klarfit MOBI FX250 is a good entry level program model.)

Some exercise bikes have programs that adapt to your heart rate. Depending on the selected target value (ex: 80% of your maximum heart rate), the bike automatically adapts the resistance according to your heart rate.

Heart rate measurement

Heartbeats can be taken either by touch sensors placed on the bicycle handlebars or by wireless chest belt. You can also find (rarer) sensors by headset or finger (generally connected by wires to the console).

Touch sensors only give an indication of the heartbeat and cannot be substituted for a pulse measurement by chest belt which gives a more precise measurement in the context of rehabilitation or medical monitoring.

The other functions

Some models of exercise bikes offer additional functions that can enhance your workouts.

  • Fan: to ventilate you during your workout
  • Impedance meter: gives the rate of body fat. This indicator is sometimes more interesting to follow because in the
  • Context of fitness, weight can stagnate, but fat can turn into muscle, especially at the beginning.
  • TV screen: to connect your mp4 player or TV antenna
  • Speakers: to connect your mp3
  • Fitness score: calculates your ability to recover after exercise

Comfort / quality

Saddle

Depending on the exercise bike models, the saddle can be adjusted for height, depth and / or tilt. It is important that the saddle is adjustable in order to find the best training position.

The saddles can also be padded, foam or gel, for better comfort.

The bikes are designed for users from 1.55m to 1.95m.

Handlebars

Apartment bikes have handlebars that differ in shape and size. Choose a bike whose handlebars allow several different grips.

The handlebars must be adjustable, in depth and / or in height. Adjust your handlebars so that you find a comfortable position for your workout.

The framework

The maximum user weight of the bike gives information about the robustness of the structure. The greater the maximum user weight, the bigger the structure and the more stable the bike (the bike will be heavier a priori).

Stability

Some devices have level compensators to stabilize the exercise bike when the ground is not completely flat (parquet, tiles, etc.). It is important that the exercise bike is stable during training to avoid any risk of the bike tipping over.

Tidying up

If you have little space, you will appreciate that your bike can easily be stored. A few exercise bikes are foldable, but most have at least some casters, either front or rear so they can be moved easily.

The flywheel

The weight of the flywheel, the flywheel mass, the gear ratio

Exercise bikes Fluid pedaling: what impact in use?

Comfortable pedaling is above all smooth pedaling. While wheel weight is one element of this fluidity, it is far from the only one. Among the elements that directly contribute to the smoothness of pedaling is the wheel weight.

The weight of the flywheel is important when choosing an exercise bike because it is what gives the pedaling movement fluidity. A too light inertia wheel will be felt during use (feeling of jerking with each turn of the pedal). It is advisable to have a flywheel of at least 7-8 kg for good pedaling comfort.

We also speak of inertia mass which is a physical concept of the complete inertia wheel + pedaling system. The flywheel mass is bound to be greater than the weight of the flywheel, so be careful to compare the same magnitude when comparing exercise bikes.

The gear ratio is the number of pedal revolutions to be performed for 1 flywheel revolution (eg: 1/7 -> 1 pedal revolution for 7 inertia wheel revolutions). This technical data is not given by all manufacturers but in general, the smaller the ratio (large denominator), the better the movement (it is better to have 1/7 than 1/5 ). This is because the flywheel will spin faster and therefore the mass of inertia created is all the greater (the mass of inertia varies as the square of the rotational speed of the wheel).

The maximum user weight

Depending on the model, it can vary from less than 90kg to more than 150kg.

Conclusion

As you will understand, the choice of an exercise bike is not done lightly. To summarize, remember to define each selection criteria in order to find the model that will meet your expectations, in order:

  • Frequency of use: occasional, regular, intensive, semi-professional, professional
  • Your athletic level and your goals (getting back into shape, losing weight, rehabilitation, etc.)
  • Your size (height and weight)
  • The accessories
