smart health connected beauty was present at CES this year with prestigious representatives like L’Oréal and L’Occitane. These two big names in cosmetics each announced a new smart health smart health connected object dedicated to skin care. Filled with great promises, will they be able to reach the level of their big brother and pioneer in the sector? Indeed, Romy's HyLab is both the Thumb and the undisputed king of the category.
Presented at CES, but two years earlier, the HyLab is thus one step ahead of its new competitors. In fact, Romy has been working on this project since 2012. They were the first company in the world to offer a vision of a formulator that provides tailored and fresh care. A few years later, HyLab was born. In 2018 in Las Vegas, the object caused a sensation. It brings together three fundamental pillars for intelligent care adapted to all situations.
L’Oréal and L’Occitane present their new smart health connected beauty object
The Perso and the Duolab are two intelligent objects that aim to revolutionize the world of smart health connected beauty. And it must be recognized thatwith names like L’Oréal and L’Occitane behind, the odds are on their side. Unsurprisingly, these announcements wowed the trade press, which was delighted to see major players relying on the IoT. We know very well that it can open up great possibilities for smart health connected beauty and help it take a big step forward.
L’Oréal entrusted the manufacture of the Perso to its L’Oréal Technology Incubator branch, when L'Occitane teamed up with Rowenta to make its Duolab. If they don't offer exactly the same functions, they were designed to meet the needs of millions of consumers. However, both of them do not meet all of these needs and have chosen to position themselves in a particular segment.

Three fundamental pillars of skincare to be respected
We mentioned above the three fundamental pillars of intelligent care. These are : the tailor-made, natural and "clean" products and the efficiency brought by the freshly formulated. Thus, the Perso com L’Oréal has bet everything on personalization and made-to-measure. The object uses its mobile application and artificial intelligence to create the most suitable treatment. Using a photo, she analyzes the skin and collects all the necessary data. In addition, the breezometer accurately assesses the air quality of the surrounding environment and the influence it has on the skin. However, the cosmetics specialist did not mention anything about the natural origin of his products. And we know that freshness is not there since the products are already formulated upstream and packaged in cartridges. This is a care mixer, not a care formulator.
L'Occitane preferred to focus Duolab on ingredients with 93% natural origin and no preservatives listed, silicone and synthetic fragrances. In addition, the device mixes the moisturizing base and concentrates "live" for a fresh final product. But its limited number of concentrates and bases (respectively 5 and 3, or only 15 different treatments possible) does not allow very extensive customization. We then realize that L’Oréal, like L’Occitane, does not respect the three pillars, but only a part. This is why the HyLab is always one step ahead.

HyLab keeps its place on the throne
Indeed Romy, offers tailor-made treatments thanks to its application and a wide range of ingredients for more than 1000 possible combinations. These are at least 95% of natural origin and again without any listed preservatives (and other controversial components). Finally, as a true skincare formulator, the cream is prepared within the device, in one minute. Romy has proven through clinical studies the relevance of freshly formulated treatments in order to preserve the effectiveness of the active ingredients which can oxidize and lose their effectiveness over time. In addition, the HyLab can be used by several people at the same time and give care recommendations based on different factors.
So generally speaking, the multiplication of these objects is a good thing for the sector. This validates the initiative taken by Romy years ago and confirms the need of the general public for this kind of product. By the way, by presenting a smart health connected watch that helps prevent the skin from aging, other actors joined the battle. Opting for a different medium, the young French startup IEVA offers here a complementary concept that goes well with these new "cosmetic robots". Maybe we can imagine future collaborations for a complete experience serving an ever more smart health connected beauty.
