According to the Bloomberg news agency, Sony's next smartwatch may not have a color LCD like the previous models, but instead relies on e-paper technology. It is currently used in Sony's SmartBand Talk fitness tracker. But other smartwatches such as the Pebble also use this technology.
E-ink displays are only black and white and often not sensitive to touch; however, the Pebble's running time of just under a week does not reach any current touch watch with a colored screen. And that's exactly the biggest criticism of Motorola's Moto 360, Samsung's Smartwatch Armada or LG's G Watch R.
According to Bloomberg, Sony's e-paper smartwatch doesn't just have a display in the watch body. Content should also be displayed on the bracelet. According to the report, the screen and the other display areas are made of a patented material. Exactly which technology Sony uses is not yet known.
The company sees its e-paper smartwatch as a fashion accessory and does not want to compete with the devices from Apple, Samsung & Co. in terms of their possibilities and features. However, there is still no information about what the Sony wearable can do. The gadget is expected to come onto the market sometime next year, Bloomberg does not name a more precise time frame.
