BeatsX headphones are the latest addition to the Beats by Dr. Dre range. The range here moves away from its flashy headphones and takes the side of small earphones, with a monochrome design. Very comfortable, practical, sober, the BeatsX are on the way to being a safe bet in the bluetooth in-ear market.

Unboxing of BeatsX

Like the rest of the Beats line, BeatsX headphones come in a beautiful sober, classy and solid white box. Note, however, that it is a little big compared to what it contains.

The headphones are securely protecteds inside the box, no worries there. You can see the logo on the front and the features and the content on the back. To open the box, just tear off a small tab on the bottom of the box that serves as an opening seal, then pull the plastic cover up.
Once the box is open, you can remove the foam that contains the headphones by pulling on another tab. And there, the first pleasant surprise, we find ourselves facing a cardboard board that contains tips of different sizes, in addition to the “wingtips” (hoops that attach below the tip to insert and allow to comfortably hold the earphones in the ear).

Second surprise, at the back of this board is a small flexible plastic storage pocket, in which you can store the headphones, in addition to the supplied micro USB charger. Two good points for the content of the BeatsX box, therefore!

BeatsX design and ergonomics

Not much to say at this level there: plastic “Flex Form” flexible and rigid at the same time, the headphones are uniformly black. The Flex Form is pleasant to the touch and the headphones are quite light. The design is very simple. Namely, the headphones are magnetized and turn off when you attach them to each other, which is very convenient.

On the left side of the cable is the micro USB socket as well as the classic Beats control bar: Two press buttons on the sides, which control the volume, and a central bar which is used to answer a call, hang up, or cut the phone microphone. The side of the headphones is indicated just below the ear tips with the letters L and R which are quite difficult to see.
On the other side is a button that turns on the headphones (as well as Bluetooth) and a White LED which indicates whether these are on. The RemoteTalk also allows you to use Siri at the press of a button.
Note that the headphones have a built-in microphone.

Using BeatsX

BeatsX are designed to work only with Apple & Android products. We have not managed to get them to work with other smartphones, these detect headphones but cannot communicate with them. In addition, Android compatibility is capricious and does not always work. Hopefully this concern will be resolved by Beats.

Once the headphones are put on, they are comfortable in the ear. The light weight and small size of the cable makes them easy to wear without any discomfort.

You can choose the earpiece you prefer based on the size of your ear from the four pairs offered, which is welcome. The headphones fit very well in the ear and are unlikely to fall without you removing them yourself.
The Bluetooth connection is done very quickly and without problems with the phone.
You can also connect them to an Apple Watch.
Small flat: the headphones cannot be plugged into a jack. If you run out of battery, they will be unusable.

The insulation is impressive : it feels like wearing an insulating helmet over your ears. It is up to you to see if you are one of those people who like to be cut off from the world when you listen to music or if you prefer to be able to hear what is going on around you, but these headphones correspond much more to the first category.

The hoops do not add much to comfort and are quite complex to put on and even more difficult to take off. We advise you to leave them in place once they are put in or not to use them at all if the original comfort suits you, because the difference is minimal. The headphones hold very well in place without the support of the poles.

As for sound, the BeatsX leave something to be desired compared to the price they cost: the bass and treble are powerful, but the mids are clearly missing, and the sound seems uneven. The subtleties of the songs we listen to escape us compared to listening with headphones. We tested the headphones with a wide variety of different musical styles, and the observation remains the same: the quality is more than correct, but the scales do not meet our expectations This problem is partly solved by the insulation of the headphones, but that is not enough and the most audiophiles will find the sound a bit bland.

In addition, it is not possible to adjust the balance of the headphones, as Beats does not offer no application for these headphones.
In terms of autonomy, the charge is done very quickly: in barely 5-10 minutes of charging, they last for two hours of use.
The maximum autonomy is barely 8 hours, which is a bit low.

As for storage, the flexible pouch provided is practical but still takes a lot of space, especially in a small pocket (it is about half the size of a conventional smartphone) you can otherwise store the headphones in a pocket without too many problems, the material makes them easy to catch to bring them out.

BeatsX against the competition

The problem of “its perfect”Is common in in-ear headphones.
These always tend to have a less present category than the others, whether bass, midrange, treble …
The quality of BeatsX is satisfactory taking this fact into account, but in terms of price, BeatsX are at elbow to elbow with other less expensive headphones like Vasa Bla from Sudio, which still cost 50 euros less.

If you are looking for sound quality in bluetooth, the Major II wireless from Marshall costs the same price and has an exceptional sound quality, with the only difference of being more cumbersome because it is a classic headset.
Apple Airpods are quite similar to BeatsX, with slightly higher sound quality, but are less comfortable and more expensive.
