With software version 5.0 Android Wear gets the promised long Watch face API. Developers can now publish their own watch face designs in the Play Store. As of January 31, 2015, Google has withdrawn its support for watch faces that have already been downloadable from the Play Store – and until then has called on programmers to switch to the official developer interface. Whether Google will remove the corresponding apps from the Play Store can be found in the corresponding section in the developer blog entry not out.
"Once the rollout is complete, please transition your existing watch faces to the new API by January 31, 2015, at which point we plan to remove support for watch faces that don't use the official API."
On a specially designed play store page Google is already showing a large selection of official watch faces, but they will only work if Android Wear 5.0 has arrived on the corresponding smartwatch. According to Google, this will be the case over the next week. The Android Wear smartphone app will also receive an update so that the watch designs can be conveniently browsed, downloaded and changed on the mobile phone.
However, a Rolex or Breitling wristwatch will probably not be made from a Google watch in the future. The corresponding manufacturers do not find "plagiarism" of luxury watches funny – and are currently taking legal action against it. But who knows, maybe one or the other manufacturer will soon offer his designs in the Play Store.
You can take a look at the first batch of official watch face designs in the following photo gallery.
