Huami Amazfit GTR review

At the manufacturer Huami, the pace of releases has accelerated. After the Bip Lite, the Verge 2 and the Stratos 2, it is the turn of the Huami Amazfit GTR to make its debut. This is a stylish sports smartwatch that can match a costume very well. Can RTG maintain a healthy balance between these two poles or is it unfortunately only one side? We tested the large 47mm aluminum version.Read this Amazfit GTR REVIEW.

Presentation

For the first time, The Chinese company Huami released two versions of a watch that differ in addition to color. The Huami Amazfit GTR is available in 42mm and 47mm versions. The smaller 42mm version is thinner at 42.6 x 42.6 x 9.2mm and also lighter at 25.5g. The 47mm variant is thicker with dimensions of 47.2 x 47.2 x 10.75mm and even weighs 48g for the stainless steel one. The titanium (40 g) and aluminum alloy (36 g) versions are a little lighter.

Amazfit GTR REVIEWThe bracelets also differ depending on the version chosen. The small 42mm GTR always comes with a matching 20mm silicone strap, only the Glitter Edition model comes with a white leather strap. The large 47mm GTR, on the other hand, comes with 22mm wide hybrid straps, which are the same as the aluminum and stainless steel ones. The strap is made of brown imitation leather on the outside and black TPU on the inside, which allows it to be worn during sports as well. The titanium version receives a strange green-gray rubber strap.

When making your choice, you should first choose a size and then a combination of colors or materials. Fortunately, it is also possible to simply exchange the 20mm or 22mm wide bracelets for other bracelets. This is handy, for example for quickly switching from a sports strap to a stylish strap or if you didn’t like the case when you bought it.

Design and manufacture

When you first open the package, you immediately notice that Huami (the manufacturer behind the Amazfit brand) is one of the world’s leading smartwatch and fitness tracker makers – after all, they also produce the Mi Band 4 for Xiaomi, which is very successful. Their expertise is reflected directly in its flawless workmanship.

Nothing wobbles, looks cheap, or has too much space. It starts with the bezel around the screen. It is made of zirconium ceramic, which makes it much more difficult to scratch. The bezel is generally matt on the top (except for the hours) and shiny on the sides.

The aluminum housing is also matt gray with the plastic underside screwed on. The sensors for pulse measurement and the two contact points for the charging station are also located on this underside. On the right side are two buttons, the top button with a red accent. This button works as a home and back button while the lower button can be assigned to a chosen function quite freely. So you can quickly switch to sports, weather or notifications modes, etc.

The included hybrid strap also looks chic and after a month of daily showering and regular sports, there are still no obvious signs of wear. The TPU side is comfortable on the skin and can certainly handle sweat better than the faux leather. Nonetheless, I would probably buy a silicone strap for long-term sports use, because the artificial leather outer surface feels a bit out of context during sports. Thanks to the standard 22mm size, changing is quick and easy.

Of course, the Amazfit GTR is again waterproof according to the ATM5 classification. This means that you can shower, bathe and swim with it without hesitation. Only deeper dives and of course salt water are to be avoided.

Screen

Since the last update of version 1.3.4.11, the GTR also offers an always-on display. This display should be turned on in the clock settings itself and turned off again at night if the light bothers you. Battery life will likely be cut in half, but you’ll still have a good run of around 12 days.

No matter which version of the GTR you choose, you always get a bright and colorful AMOLED display with a high pixel density of 326 PPI (pixels per inch). This is because the larger version not only has a display shift from 1.2 to 1.39 inches, but also the resolution from 390 x 390 pixels to 454 x 454 pixels. This puts the Amazfit GTR on a par with the Honor Watch Magic and the Huawei Watch GT. Both variants of GTR are also protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

The brightness can be continuously adjusted on the watch itself or you can let the automatic mode do the work. I also tried this last point during the test and never had any reading problems. The screen becomes beautiful and bright and the ambient light sensor works well. Unfortunately, the display usually takes a second to switch to a required higher brightness after you activate it by lifting your wrist. The Honor Watch arguably does better better and Amazfit should update to the same level.

As the clock is usually controlled by the touchscreen, quality is the order of the day. Fortunately, it responds very quickly to all input and scan. But above all, it’s nice and big, especially in the 47mm version, so that the symbols aren’t too small and you don’t have to be too meticulous in “pointing” your finger.

Operation

Besides the two buttons already mentioned, the clock works by touching and swiping the touch screen. On the left or right of the home screen (watch face), you can see the steps, kilometers and calories burned during the day, as well as the current heart rate on the other. A tap on one of the displays gives you even more details in the form of more detailed diagrams and statistics.

Above the home screen you’ll find quick settings as well as connection status and remaining battery charge as a percentage. The quick settings are: flashlight, brightness, non-stop mode (schedule, intelligent sleep detection and on / off), power save mode (step and sleep tracking only), and sleep lock. screen.

Under the home screen, all functions are listed and can be sorted in the app as you like. I have for example the music control at the top, then the weather forecast follows, and so on. The different functions are: Music, weather, notifications, status (steps, etc.), pulse, sport, activities (recordings), alarm, reminders, More (compass, stopwatch, countdown timer, mobile phone search) and settings (dialing, screen duration activated, shortcut for lower button, system info). If you absolutely don’t need one or more functions, you can hide them completely.

Functions

The connection between the cell phone and the clock is established via Bluetooth 5.0 LE and is very stable and fast. This can be seen in the timing of steps and workouts as well as in music control. You can thus control the music of your mobile phone (which also works with Spotif) but not if you use one of the 12 sports modes. Unfortunately, there is no internal memory on the clock.

Application

The official Amazfit app is available for Android and iOS. This is a full copy of the well-known Mi Fit app with a black-white-red color scheme. As a result, you have an overview of the status including steps, sleep, pulse, weight, sport and daily goal of steps on the home page. In the tab to the right of the profile, all the devices are listed, so also the GTR.

You can therefore choose from the 40 app dials, activate Smart Lock, manage call and app notifications (each app can be disabled / disabled), enable inactivity warnings and SMS as well as notifications. step counting. You can create your own vibration pattern for all types of notifications. The vibration, however, is already strong enough that you wouldn’t have to amplify anything, but rather weaken it.

In addition, you can search the clock, select the wear side, adjust when the screen should be activated by lifting the wrist, configure the pulse measurement during the day (every 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes) and activate sleep monitoring. The location of the weather forecast can also be detected automatically or entered manually.

Overall, the Amazfit app already offers a number of tuning options and even excellent sync with Strava. But if you don’t have the Google Fit sync of the Mi Fit app (Android / iOS), you can just use it because it’s almost the same app. For more watch interfaces there are the Notify & Fitness and AmazFaces apps, although they didn’t really work for me. Apple fans can use the AmazTools here.

Sports & fitness

Since the GTR is meant to be a sports watch first and foremost, there are some sports modes that shouldn’t be missing. A total of 12 different activities can be started directly on the watch. These are: outdoor running, jogging (walking / walking), cycling, treadmill, indoor cycling, outdoor swimming, swimming in the pool, crosstraining, climbing, trail running, skiing and training (free ). From there, outdoor running, jogging (walking), cycling, open water, rock climbing, trail running, and skiing are tracked by GPS.

GPS amazfit gtr sportRunning and cycling with GPS

This is the first and about the only major review that can be made of the Amazfit GTR. Unfortunately, GPS tracking isn’t really fast, good, or reliable yet. If you leave the house and start searching for a GPS signal, it will take 1-2 minutes for the GTR to find it. For comparison: my Honor Watch Magic and the Garmin Forerunner 645 can do it in seconds in exactly the same place.

With the latest version 1.3.4.11 update, the GPS position is generally much faster. The GTR therefore only needs 20 to 30 seconds to find a signal. The Honor Watch and the Garmin 645 are even faster with their 5 seconds. Unfortunately, the tracking accuracy has hardly improved. After all, the update shows that Amazfit is still trying to improve the GTR.

Once you find a GPS signal, it may cut off during the run, even when I was walking on the banks of the Rhine. In this case, the GTR calculates the distance from the steps taken, at least until it receives a signal. Unfortunately, this means that the distance I was supposed to walk is recorded even less accurately and that I should have walked 630 meters more than what the Garmin recorded.

Even during a run in the park, the GTR was 400 yards away while the Honor Watch was only 130 yards away. I had the same errors and signal interruptions while cycling and so I think this is a general weakness of the GPS. Here, a simple update has to be done, which significantly improves the performance of the GPS, which unfortunately is not yet the case with previous updates. Likewise, gpx.files files cannot be imported, although Stratos and Verge both offer this possibility.

Also interesting: to pause the active sport mode, you have to press one of the two buttons for about 2 seconds. That’s two seconds too long to run faster or ride a bike, especially if you want to measure times as accurately as possible. With the Honor Watch, for example, a short press of the top button is enough to stop training. To continue or end tracking you have to use the “Play” or “Stop” symbol on the screen, which is especially difficult when swimming with the wet screen and fingers. Here, too, other clocks simply use one of the keys.

Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to test swim mode yet. At least the screen is locked and can only be unlocked by pressing one of the keys. While tracking, you can see the time, distance in meters, and calories burned on the first screen.

The second screen displays the average speed per 100 meters, the average number of beats and the maximum number of beats per minute. Then you can also see the SWOLF value on the clock and in the app.

Sleep, steps and pulse

When it comes to step tracking, I find the GTR very accurate and even more accurate than the Honor Watch Magic, which had 100-200 more steps each day. While sleeping, the GTR recognizes, like the Mi Band 4, sleeping quietly in bed and when you are still active on your laptop. According to Amazfit, you often fall asleep 10 minutes earlier and wake up 10 minutes later when you were already awake but lying in your bed.

The pulse measurement appears to be very accurate, so you can clearly see when you ran after your subway and when there were quiet phases. Of course, the GTR doesn’t come close to the accuracy of an athletic chest strap, but the pulse measurements can still serve as guidance.

Charge

As we have already mentioned, the two versions of the  also differed in the size of the batteries. The 42mm version is promised for 12 days, while our 47mm model even has a 24-day battery life. And to everyone’s surprise, the advertising promises here are absolutely correct and, in my case, have even been exceeded. In my use I achieved a 33% remaining battery power after 21 days, so it could be about 10 days more. So the battery life for me is over 4 weeks!

This is how I used my watch: automatic screen brightness, alarm Monday to Friday, notifications on the WhatsApp band, Skype, calls, inactivity warning, lift to activate during the day, heart rate monitor every minute & while sleeping and occasional music control. As for sports, I had 10 sports units with 38.4 km traveled in 8 hours and 16 minutes and 3 hours with GPS tracking enabled.

Depending on personal use, runtime will vary of course, but overall shouldn’t disappoint. Charging then takes about 2 hours with the included charging cradle.

CONCLUSION

The sober and classic design of the Amazfit GTR makes it a discreet but effective ally when it comes to basic tracking in fitness and health. Even if it lacks several features such as GPS, microphone or wireless charging, this watch is still interesting for its price. If you follow your physical activities closely and want to share them with those around you, this item is for you.
