Wearable market to boom, Apple Watch leads

IDC's market researchers are predicting strong growth for wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers. In 2015 as a whole, almost 160 percent more devices of this type are to be sold than was the case in 2014.

The market research company IDC predicts a bright future for wearables in the coming years. In 2014, 28.9 million smartwatches and fitness trackers were sold, and in 2015 a total of 76.1 million such devices are to go over the counter. That would be an increase of almost 160 percent. In 2024, 173.4 million wearables are expected to be sold.

The numbers published by IDC refer to "smart wearables" such as smartwatches and "basic wearables" such as fitness trackers. The former currently represent only a third of the entire wearable market. However, this should change by 2018 at the latest – then Smartwatches IDC will outperform the cheaper basic wearables. Until then, they should act much more independently than most current models, whose main feature is usually the notification function for incoming messages and calls on the smart health connected phone.

If IDC is right in its forecast, Apple will be the leader in wearable operating systems with its watch in 2015. While market researchers expect 13.9 million devices to be sold with watchOS, only 4.1 million Android Wear smartwatches should find their buyers. Apple has not yet released current sales figures for its first smartwatch. In third place is IDC Pebble OS with 2.1 million wearables and Tizen, as used in Samsung smartwatches, in fifth place with 1.6 million devices.
