new clinical trial shows benefits but …

We know that restrictive diets are harmful to health. In the short term, they can lead to deficiencies while in the medium and long term, they have no benefit on what they claim to “cure”, namely, being overweight. A new clinical trial nuances this discourse, at least for a few parameters.

Theclinical Review in question has duration two years. We know that most people who start a restrictive diet to lose weight regain all of their weight, if not more, in the long term (5 to 10 years). 143 participants in overweight participated in this randomized trial. The researchers measured the effect of this restriction on weight loss and general appetite of patients. Beneficial effects are measured but already, after two years, scientists note a decline in adherence to prescribed diets.

However, other publications arising from the same cohort of patients have emerged and go deeper into the issue of weight loss. We then see that life quality, the sleep and sexual relations are improved. The same applies to eating behavior. However, this does not in any way resolve the problem of time, which means that these studies, far from being obsolete, aim to measure the complex phenomenon of maintaining a healthy weight in a lifetime (which is not its objective first, of course.)

Let's focus on learning

Know how to eat well, as much for his health as for his pleasure, is of capital importance to preserve an optimal state of health, well-being and an adequate quality of life. Learning to eat well means knowing basic rules from scientific and dietetic knowledge, but above all being able to adapt it to your own life, your own environment, your culture, the availability of food, your psychology , etc. because life is constantly changing and it puts us through a lot of hardships, both professional and personal, and emotions.

Knowledge allows us to adapt our diet to this set of situations. Learning to reconnect to your feelings of satiety is also an essential asset in the quest for a healthy weight. Calorie restriction can then be useful, as long as you know how to use it and that it is adapted to you and your environment.

What you must remember

  • A new clinical trial has found benefits from calorie restriction on weight loss and appetite.
  • Other published studies show that the benefits are numerous, but the essay remains too short to understand the complex phenomenon of weight maintenance over a lifetime.
  • Avoid diets, learn to eat well, adapt it to your own life and environment.
