The eHealth and mHealth Trends 2024 included wearables, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, chatbots and blockchain. Some of these digital health trends really took off this year and others will only be ready for the market in the coming years. It is therefore worthwhile to follow the development of all trends.
eHealth Trend 1: Wearables and the Internet of Medical Things
The Internet of Things is fundamentally changing healthcare. Wearables and telemedicine, among other things, help patients, staff and inventories to be tracked efficiently, chronic diseases treated better, critical medical devices such as EKG monitored, medication prescriptions optimized and vital signs such as skin temperature, glucose level or blood pressure measured.
With the intelligent pill – the so-called Smart Pill – the first drug approved by the FDA came on the market in 2017, which is equipped with a monitoring technology, regulates the dosage and monitors internal reactions. And Google and Novartis developed a contact lens that monitors a diabetic's glucose levels by analyzing their tears, reporting the values to an insulin pump, and alerting patients.
eHealth Trends 2 and 3: Blockchain, Augmented & Virtual Reality
While blockchain still has few use cases, AR and VR are already closer to practical application in healthcare. For example, virtual reality is used in pain treatment and augmented reality is used in surgical planning, imaging and complex diagnostics, among other things. In the course for 2025, the blockchain could develop from a perceived hype to an early commercial use. Companies such as Change Healthcare, Hashed Health and Guardtime will continue to expand their already commercial use cases. The debate will now turn to acceptance and examine how and where blockchain technology can be used in healthcare.
eHealth Trend 4: Artificial Intelligence
2024 could be the year for artificial intelligence. Thanks to artificial intelligence, patients can use health data better and, above all, more personalized. KLinear and non-clinical use cases will show results that further support growth in healthcare. However, it remains to be seen whether users are convinced of the added benefit of this technology enough to provide the necessary budget for it. Nevertheless, artificial intelligence and machine learning will achieve initial success, particularly in the areas of imaging diagnostics, drug discovery and risk analysis.
eHealth Trend 5: voice and chatbot applications
Specialized players such as Nuance, Orbita and leading technology companies (Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft) rely on targeted language technologies that are suitable for use cases in the healthcare sector. So far, chatbots & Co. are only suitable for limited voice-based applications such as fast medical writers and voice-based interactions, but they offer growth opportunities in tested clinical use cases such as elderly care, in the monitoring of chronic diseases and in the optimization of medical workflows.
eHealth Trend 6: digital health services for health insured
Health insurance companies have to rethink in order to continue growing. For this reason, an increasing number of health insurance companies are offering digital health services in some form in order to reduce the cost of potential claims, to personalize the user experience of their insured, or to offer premiums to couple individual health data. With Otto Nova recently there was even the first fully digitized private health insurance in Germany. The startup, for which “Lion's Den” is promoted by Frank Thelen, is aimed at young, tech-savvy and well-earning people. All bureaucracy can be dealt with using a smartphone: photograph and submit invoices, chat with customer service instead of making calls, and speak to the doctor via ehealth telephony from health home in a so-called ehealth consultation.
